Sega is pulling the vast majority of classic Sonic games from digital stores

The development faced serious problems; Naka, the last of the original Sonic development team, resigned as head of Sonic Team to form Prope, and the team split so work could begin on a Nintendo Wii Sonic game. Sonic differed by being designed from the start to be a specific character and convey specific messages. Sonic games go out of their way to include distinctive music, themes, and stories that propel Sonic beyond being “just” a game. These aspects separate Sonic from his platforming contemporaries while also helping the character to endure in peoples’ hearts. In SEGA’s latest Sonic Frontiers trailer, the focus was placed on showing off the new skill tree system and how combat will take place. For the first time in a Sonic game, Sonic has a skill tree, loaded up with new abilities for him to learn. This new item can be obtained via fallen enemies and breakable items around the islands.

Plus, we’re still coming off the highs of Sonic’s 30th anniversary and the second movie. It makes financial sense for Sega to release these games over and over and over again, especially now with general interest in the franchise higher than it’s been in a while. I can’t deny that I’ve double-dipped on Sonic 1-3 more than my fair share in my 30-plus years as a fan.

It’s something that we see in a lot of classic video game collections, and Sonic Origins would have benefitted from something similar. With a remaster on the way, Sonic Colors is back in the spotlight – and it could actually deserve a little of that limelight. Sega can’t be that desperate to win back the “Big Hatedom”, can they? Apparently, he has enough of a fanbase to warrant the production of action figures. He could easily be Rescued from the Scrappy Heap by throwing a few more IQ points his way.

Honestly, I haven’t even played a Sonic game since the Sega Dreamcast stopped existing. In short, I really have done nothing to make my dream of making a Sonic game a reality — until today. He brings an attitude to his work that is far afield from the stereotypical YouTube gaming personality.
